The Triangle

The Triangle is in the center of North Carolina and is about three hours from both the coast and the mountains. Hillsborough, often described as the Colonial Williamsburg of North Carolina, is known for its rural charm and historical significance.   Its population of 5,000 is growing because of its convenient location to the Research Triangle Park and the employment centers in Burlington and Greensboro. Current housing ranges from vintage 18th century colonials to smart contemporaries and new tradition.   The downtown area offers main street shopping but other centers are located nearby. The Daniel Boone Complex includes nearly 60 shops appealing to antique lovers.

Durham began in 1854, when Dr. Bartlett Durham sold four acres of land to the North Carolina Railroad Company to build a new station between Hillsborough and Raleigh. A small village soon sprang up around the depot. In 1865, huge armies of Union and Confederate forces gathered in Durham as General Joseph E. Johnston negotiated his surrender to General William T. Sherman at Bennett Place, the largest troop surrender at the end of the Civil War.

Today, Durham is home to Research Triangle Park, Duke and North Carolina Cerntral universities and many City of Medicine, USA medical, diet and fitness centers. Durham is also home to 13 historic sites, three art centers, nine signature annual events with national or regional recognition, plus dozens of other core and celebrated annual events, six science and nature centers and great spectator sports venues.

Chatham Street in Cary’s center still evokes a laidback small-town atmosphere, but elsewhere the town is moving inexorably, frenetically, toward a big city’s pace.

Located in Wake County. Cary is located near the center of North Carolina. The closest surrounding cities are Raleigh and Apex, however Chapel Hill, Durham, Garner, Fuquay Varina, Morrisville, Sanford, Wake Forest, and Pittsboro are all within a 40-minute drive. The closest airport is Raleigh-Durham International (RDU) which is about 15 minutes away by interstate. The most well-known work center near Cary is Research Triangle Park (RTP) which is about 30 minutes by car. Nearly all of the above-mentioned cities have their own commercial centers as well. Cary hosts Regency Park, Weston Park, and MacGregor Park. Colleges and universities within easy commute from Cary include North Carolina State University (in Raleigh), Duke University (in Durham), and University of North Carolina (in Chapel Hill). Some of the smaller colleges are Meredith College, Meredith College, Peace College, and Wake Technical College. Cary is two-and-a-half hours to the ocean and three house to the mountains.

Cary’s population which has grown from 44,276 in 1990 to 101,715 in 2002 makes the town a big suburban area with a small-town feel.  Cary is located in central North Carolina’s Wake County in the heart of the Triangle area. It is between Raleigh and Research Triangle Park, near Jordan Lake.

It is the third largest municipality in the Triangle and the 10th largest in the state, and many consider it the South’s newest city. But those who live in town say it is also a place of close-knit neighborhoods and civic groups.

Cary is a mix of old and new. It has a modern, centralized Town Hall campus and an old-style refurbished downtown, which is within walking distance of older neighborhoods. Nearby is Cary Elementary School, one of the oldest public schools in North Carolina, and an often-touted symbol of the town’s rich history.  Downtown Cary is the main attraction when it comes to traditional town events, such as the Lazy Daze Arts and Crafts Festival. On the last Saturday in August, blocks of downtown are given over to more than 500 exhibits of handmade crafts and original works of art, which attract thousands of visitors from all across the state.

Each year, the town also holds the Page One Festival of Books for which nationally known writers come to read their work and schmooze with prospective publishers.  Five minutes away from downtown, though, modern subdivisions with streets that end in cul-de-sacs abound. Here is the new Cary of dozens of shopping centers and lots of restaurants.  The new Cary is where well-heeled young families come to live, work in the area’s high-tech industries and school their children. It is one of the Triangle’s best addresses, one people are willing to pay for.  Home to the largest, privately-held software company in the world—SAS Institute, Cary has attracted other key, world-class businesses including IBM, MCI, Siemens, American Airlines, Lucent Technologies, Oxford University Press, the Lord Corporation, and Austin Foods.  There are two country clubs, 184 restaurants and a mall, Cary Towne Center, that houses Hecht’s, Dillard’s and Sears department stores as well as The Gap.

It is in this newer part of Cary that an array of new hot spots has come to town. The best known is Gypsy’s Shiny Diner, which opened in late 1997 to offer a 1950s atmosphere and diner-style food. It is on Buck Jones Road at Devonshire Place.  Other new spots include the steakhouse Ruth’s Chris, which is on Buck Jones Road; a family-oriented skating rink, Jellybeans, also on Buck Jones Road; and a hotel, Embassy Suites, which has sprouted up on Harrison Avenue.  As for schools, there is Cary Academy, which opened in August not far from SAS Institute, with 245 students in grades 6-10. Grade 11 is to be added in the coming school year.  Those who plan to send their children to the school on Harrison Avenue should be prepared for the cost. Tuition for the upper school is $9,200. The middle school is $8,750 a year.

Morrisville

The up and coming community to join the Triangle, growing by leaps and bounds.

While homes were being built in Cary, Morrisville officials were busy attracting thriving businesses such as USA Today, Kaiser Permanente, AT&T, Radian and MCI.

But the 16-screen Carmike Cinema draws folks to Morrisville from across the Triangle, especially on nights and weekends. And new homes, apartments, and hotels are going up all over town.

Just off Interstate 40, Morrisville’s commercial growth includes Triangle Factory Shops, a mall with more than 50 manufacturer-owned outlet stores. The Northern Wake Expressway, a new highway that will move traffic from Raleigh-Durham International Airport around the capital faster, also promises to add further polish to Morrisville’s image as a hub of business.

But Morrisville is not all business.

With Raleigh-Durham International Airport for a neighbor, Morrisville is about 13.2 square miles in area, has five parks on 51 acres providing the town’s 2,123 residents with the opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities. And for those who like flowers, there is a greenhouse close to downtown where orchards bloom year-round. Civil War buffs can gaze at two shells displayed in the town’s newly renovated town hall. And in the Shiloh area, visitors will find a spirited community founded by freed men and women after the abolition of slavery.

The Capitol presides over downtown Raleigh, where older business districts are seeing new activity, a venerable auditorium is getting additions, and a children’s museum has been completed.

Following the American Revolution, part of the former English colony of Carolina became the state of North Carolina, and a permanent capital city was necessary. In 1792, the city of Raleigh was established and named in honor of navigator and historian Sir Walter Raleigh. Raleigh, North Carolina has the distinction of being the only state capital to have been established on land specifically purchased by the state for its government seat. The city’s founding fathers called Raleigh the “City of Oaks,” and dedicated themselves to maintaining the area’s wooded tracts and grassy parks.

The seventeenth president of the United States — Andrew Johnson — was born in Raleigh in 1808. Some 60,000 Union troops were quartered in Raleigh when word came of President Lincoln’s assassination in April 1865. Torch-carrying troops, bent on revenge, headed downtown. General John Alexander Logan stopped the troops at gunpoint, thus saving Raleigh’s downtown. Raleigh remained a rather sleepy state capital until 1959 when an initiative by the State of North Carolina carved out the now world-renowned Research Triangle Park just west of the city. This nucleus of research has transformed the Raleigh, North Carolina area into one of the fastest growing and most desirable cities to call home in America.

Lauded as the “The Best Place to Live in America” by Money magazine in 1994 and the “Best Place to Live in the South” in 2000, Raleigh provides its people and enterprises with a world-class combination of economic vitality, educational opportunity, environmental quality and community quality-of-life.

Has not only six colleges and universities, but also a multi-sport arena, a billion-dollar second loop highway under construction, and a growing and diverse collection of small- to mid-size businesses, many feeding off nearby Research Triangle Park, 15 miles northwest of downtown Raleigh.

From scratch 206 years ago as the state’s new square-mile capital, Raleigh was a sleepy town for most of its history and never built a strong manufacturing base. But the city has grown rapidly for three decades, capitalizing on the success of Research Triangle Park.

Older neighborhoods lie generally inside Interstate 440, more commonly called The Beltline. Many old homes in Oakwood, Boylan Heights and Mordecai have been restored, and a few downtown housing developments are under way.

Growth has spread outside the 24-mile Beltline loop, especially throughout the half of the city known as North Raleigh, filled with leafy subdivisions, quiet cul-de-sacs, strip malls and congested roads.

New Outer Loop, Interstate 540, is being built across Raleigh’s northern tier. Its first segment connects I-40 near RTP to U.S. 70 near Raleigh-Durham International Airport. From there, the northern half of the loop will arc across North Raleigh and end at a planned U.S. 64 bypass near Knightdale, east of Raleigh.

In southwest Raleigh and along the Hillsborough Street commercial district are centered around N.C. State University, North Carolina’s biggest college. Raleigh’s new arena is has been completed next to N.C. State’s Carter-Finley Stadium and near the State Fairgrounds, off Wade Avenue near I-40. It is  the home of The National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes.

Raleigh is the fastest-growing sector of the city, extending across the Neuse River to Wake Forest and toward Rolesville. A new mall will open in Spring 2002 and is located between the Outer Loop and Capital Boulevard.

The namesake of English explorer Sir Walter Raleigh — who never set foot in the colony that became North Carolina — has a growing artistic community and many cultural attractions, including several state museums, the N.C. Symphony Orchestra and The North Carolina Theatre. Raleigh has added two or three performance halls to its venerable downtown Memorial Auditorium to create a performing arts center. The Exploris children’s museum has been completed next to the downtown Moore Square, across from the historic City Market dining and shopping district.

Raleigh has an extensive park system and is building one of the country’s best recreational greenway systems along its creeks, lakes and The Neuse River, with many more miles complete than any other North Carolina town’s; most of it remains to be built. Other recreation attractions are Falls Lake to the north, Jordan Lake to the west, and the city’s Lake Wheeler to the south.

Raleigh keeps growing outward, the revitalization of old downtown property continues at a modest pace, turning warehouses into restaurants and condos in several places along railroad tracks. A few new residential projects are popping up downtown, too.
